artist of the week :: guy denning

i think he describes his work (and the process of painting) the best:
I think that painting is a focusing; a process of exaggeration and editing of a suggestion of reality. I can start with a skeleton, like a foundation illustration, perhaps taken from a life study or a photograph and then I start to manipulate that framework. All the time I am hoping for accidents with the paint as the accidents are usually the source of greatest productivity. Perhaps the accidents of paint give me a similar perspective as the viewer to the finished painting: the surprise at something fresh or something that is not immediately understood in its construction. This aspect of painting is like, perhaps, finding the uncontrolled intention.
I know when it’s right or, at least, tending towards right but I don’t know how to do it. If I knew how to do it, that there was a predetermined and guaranteed method, then it wouldn’t be the challenge that forces me to paint continually.

carne griffiths' paintings and illustrations are energetic and controlled all at once.

he drips and controls ink washes and applies marks with pen and pencil - all creating atmospheric portraits full of emotion - specifically strength and poise. the women he paints are typically juxtaposed with natural elements (leaves, feathers, tree branches, etc), showing woman's communion and connection with nature.

i typically thank god for dvr, because it keeps me from feeling like i am being force fed whatever garbage america is selling. BUT, while in the hospital last night holding my sleeping 2-day old baby, a commercial came on during the office for the 'it gets better' project. this is a user-generated, cyber-community started to give voice and hope to people (aimed at youth, but i would guess that they're not the only ones who struggle) who are gay but afraid to 'come out'.
i was struck by the awesomeness of this campaign, and felt immediately like it needed to be shared.

so... if you are struggling... feeling alone... just type your way over to www.itgetsbetter.org (or click the previous link) and become immersed in others (people you recognize and people you dont) who want to help hold you up and honor who you are.

artpeace shakedown scholarship winners!

thomas ap art students rachel king and lyuda didovets were each awarded $1000 scholarships through artpeace shakedown, an annual county-wide high school arts exhibition.

rachel and lyuda were selected from over 65 other applicants, based on their submission of an art piece and an essay on the importance of the arts. these two young ladies will be awarded the scholarships at the shakedown opening tonight (friday, may 13^th) at 6:30pm at village gate.

YOU SHOULD GO! its a wonderful event full of delicious food and naturally great artwork from students from around the area.

thanks to tech guru max kelley, i found out about a great alternative to the adobe creative suite for those of you who don't have the money or don't want to do any illegal downloading.
the program is called aviary (www.aviary.com) and has many very similar attributes to the adobe creative suite. the photoshop program ("image editor") looks and runs basically the same.
the best part is, its web-based, so you do not need to download anything to your computer!
enjoy.

kris lewis says, "as i begin a painting the subject physically, emotionally and spiritually reveals itself to me. each brushstroke speaks to the subsequent stroke, carrying out a dialogue, linking my subject and me as if we were meeting for the first time. i find this uncertainty exciting and embrace the indecisive nature of my work."

his work although contemporary in theme is classical in composition and style. this interaction and dialog with the history of art is inspiring, and reminds us that we dont live in an artistic bubble. lewis' latvian heritage is evident in the works, as is the influence of artists like albrecht durer, hieronymus bosch, gustav klimt, and hans holbein. they also have a strong motion picture/hollywood quality to them in my opinion - again showing that what we digest informs what we create.

i'm thinking about doing some sort of alphabet series with musician portraits. if i do go ahead with it - this will be the first piece... "B for The Black Keys". this is their singer/guitarist dan auerbach.

it is small, allowing me to play with the scale of the stencil openings and marks made by pencils and paintbrushes.

i have been looking at a great deal of collage artists lately. as always, i am continuing to look for ways to create an art work that is part painting and part artifact... almost like it has been pulled out of the ground... once being part of a wall or some larger structure.

i was lucky enough to have been given a wonderful mentor, guide, and teacher in high school by the name of jim nowak.

he taught me so many things... the importance of our words, our deeds, our outlook on the world. how money is worth far less than relationships and self-worth, and that different is good... "there is no weird."

mr. nowak died in a car crash in kenya last week while in the midst of his organization's work building schools and medical facilities (find out more at the building futures website).

he inspired me and just about every person he met. and he will be greatly missed.

painting the night is hard. the subtlety of the light is really challenging to represent... especially because getting a camera to capture it accurately is tough.
dan witz is able to show us the mood of the night - whether its a hot and sticky august one or one of those wonderful cool early summer nights. these paintings transport me there.

he also has done a cool series of portraits where the only light source is a cell phone... and another of mosh pits. this guy can pick cool topics for paintings.
maybe more on those later... for now, the elegant, lonely urban landscapes:

so its obvious he is interested in the play of light and how it describes objects. they remind me of my favorite painting from rochester's memorial art gallery, by winslow homer:

asbestos is a street artist hailing from dublin, ireland.
he specializes in mixed media artwork, combining mediums like photography and painting onto found objects (often wood).
he then installs these pieces either back onto the streets, or hangs them on gallery wall spaces.
it is obvious why i am drawn and inspired by his work.

im loving ben tour's expressive portraits. the subtle non-paint elements add a little something extra to the pieces.

from his website: Canadian-born artist Ben Tour (b. 1977) channels a dark, often haunting sense of humanism in his work. His observations deftly inform his paintings, enabling him to capture the essence of a character, and then distort that view any way he desires. Frenetic lines, swaths of color, and intimate angles all convey a sense that Tour may not only be drawing inspiration from the lives of strangers he observes, but manifesting his own personal experiences as well. Portfolio Day is a great opportunity for any student who is planning to go into an art-related field, whether that means going to an art school or not.
You will get feedback about your artwork from as many representatives as you can get to within the time you are there.
Every art school, as well as some universities, will have representatives there to critique your work, and let you know if you would be a good fit with their school climate.
This tends to be a very rewarding opportunity for our students – most feedback is very positive… But remember, everyone has a different opinion – so please don’t be discouraged by anything that a specific rep might say – think about their comments, but don’t take them as the bottom line about your art.

Registration begins at 9am, but you may arrive at anytime. You will stand in line for just about every school, so I would suggest planning to stay AT LEAST 2 hours, but if you can stay the entire time, it will be to your advantage. Also, you may want to bring your sketchbook or something else to do while you stand in lines.

collage, charcoal, paint. lots of textures, balance of detail and gesture, and a wonderful open space. sometimes, less is more.
the ap class is currently doing a piece based on her work and andy warhol's. we'll see how it all turns out.

"Grossmann collages faces together from photocopies of old photographs in a way that is subtle and coherently representational, playing at transparency. “I collage the figures from a million different sources. What acts as a leg in one is not a leg; I put in boys bits for girls. If you look at collage of the earlier practitioners – whom I love – they used it for a strange, shattering effect, with say a huge head and tiny body, that kind of thing. I wanted to use my collage so that it appeared to make sense, but actually didn’t. I found it much more exciting to have it look real.” She calls this process ‘painting with photography’, I draw and paint with the photograph, and then re-photograph, then I blow it up, and I keep drawing and painting.”'

"structure&freedom" art show opening sept. 13

i will be displaying my most recent body of work at the owl house starting sunday, september 12. it is comprised of paintings, drawings, and mixed media pieces centered around the theme 'structure&freedom'. they have all been created between 2008 and 2010.

the opening reception on monday, september 13th from 7-9pm is free and open to anyone. there will be delicious snacks provided by the owl house, and the bar will be open selling beverages for all ages.

i would love to have you join me for this event - if you cant make it, definitely check out the owl house sometime soon. it is my new favorite spot in the city i love.

an old friend of mine, brian van etten, is the head chef for a new restaurant opened by two other friends, jeff ching and andrea parros. its called THE OWL HOUSE. (you can check out their website or find them on facebook)

they opened with full hours and service yesterday, and you should all check it out. they are at 75 marshall street, 14607... the site of the old rochester fave THE ATOMIC EGGPLANT.

they serve a rotating menu of 'new american cuisine' (same main menu daily, but with different dinner and dessert menu each night), along with over 30 craft beers, artisan wines, and unique cocktails. they also cater to the dietary needs of vegan and gluten-free folks, with a large assortment of dishes for each.

the food is delicious (my personal favorite is 'the cherub' sandwich) and the ambiance is stellar. so, if you're looking for a great place to dine, you should check them out! see a review from city newspaper here.

my friend rob antonucci's great new artwork is hanging on the walls currently, with an opening reception on august 17th from 7-10pm. also, i was lucky enough to be asked to design their menu (and will be hanging my artwork there in the fall as well). here is the main menu, as of august 4th, 2010 (there are also special menus for vegan, gluten-free, dinner, dessert, and kids):

summers over half gone... i am half sad and half excited.

this week has brought me some glimpses of what my AP students have been working on for their summer work, and im starting to feel that pull again.

i cant wait to start working intensely with the new AP class... although before that it means saying goodbye to my 2009-10 crew.

this process is part of what makes this job exciting, energizing, and fresh each september.

we are all products of our consumer culture.

we talked in drawing 2 last week about this a good amount during our contemporary artist presentation. i thought this artist further represented the ideas we talked about regarding body image and consumer culture.

this is jane maxwell's artist statement, taken from her website:

Feminine silhouettes are central icons in this work examining contemporary women and body image.

From movies and television, to magazines and billboards, we are inundated with representations of the perfect figure. This art deconstructs the ideal, by depicting women who have been stripped of fashion and airbrushing--and are shaped instead from a layering of vintage produce crate labels, Hollywood posters, and related ephemera.

This work often depicts women in conversation, comparison or repetition, underscoring the role female camaraderie and competition play in the ideal body quest, and making a statement about our culture's insistence on uniformity.

Each canvas is the result of many hours of labor--layering, sanding, building up and scraping back. Layers are created using a special technique with hot melted beeswax. The most recent work is finished with layers of high-gloss resin.

this program is for incoming high school seniors who are planning on attending an art school/program post-high school.
it is centered around the process of preparing a college entry art portfolio with emphasis on in-depth investigation of media, concept development, and critical analysis. you will draw from life (still life and figure), participate in critiques, and conduct visual resarch.

last saturday, webster hosted the 33rd annual community arts day at webster schroeder high school.
...thats right, community arts day will always be older than me.

as always, the artwork on display 1st-12th grade was amazing. it is great to see the progression that our webster students follow during their years with us. i am proud of my students, and look forward to my son's progression during these years as well...

so my student teacher carrie bell's last day was today... we will all really miss her.

talking to carrie extensively in the past 6 weeks has made me really reflect on what i do and how i do it.
i feel so blessed to be able to work with young people who care so deeply about not only making great art, but being really good people... and who are dedicated to growth and to each other.
i feel lucky every day.

if you are reading this, chances are you are part of the reason i feel this way.

many times, students come to the high school with natural abilities as artists and designers. their 8 years of art training by our awesome art staff gives them all the tools to see the world in their own unique way. its then our job to take those raw materials and help form and guide them into artists' whose voices are unique and personal (lots of times we're just along for the ride).

jordan tiberio is one of many students who display this personal vision.
jordan is currently a junior who spends many many hours outside of school working on developing her eye as a photographer (she also spends many hours during school here honing her drawing skills).

she has recently won 4 regional gold keys (3 photo, 1 drawing) from the scholastic art & writing awards, along with 1 national gold key (photo)!
i am amazed by her vision as an artist already, and am excited to see where all this work and thought takes her from here!

doodle for google 2010!

google is having a contest again this year to design a 'google' logo for their homepage. it is constantly changing to recognize different holidays and events, and you have your chance to design one of them!
this year's theme is 'IF I COULD DO ANYTHING, I WOULD...'
you have access to a drawing tablet to draw in photoshop whenever you want - all of our computers have them installed, along with the laptop cart that is in my room.
this is an AMAZING opportunity - and the deadline is march 31!
